THE TRAILHEAD COMMUNITY STORY

Trailhead Community is a non-profit organization that was established in 2015 with the aim of providing supportive and inclusive housing options for adults with neurodiverse conditions such as autism, Down syndrome, and other developmental disabilities. The organization was founded by a group of parents and advocates who recognized the need for safe, affordable, and inclusive housing for neurodiverse adults as they transition from childhood to adulthood.
There are an estimated 20,000 adults with developmental disabilities living in Colorado with caretakers who are over 60 years old. What will happen to these people when their caregivers can no longer take care of them? With average incomes of $800-$1200 per month, even modest apartments are out of reach financially; And this group of people need just a little extra support in the form of 24/7 staffing and universal design features. They also need opportunities to make friends, to grow and learn. Like everyone else, they are happiest when they are independent and productive.
